Dominic's Story: Glass Half full
Glass half full. This is the mindset we have done our best to hold strong to ever since we heard the words, ‘Dominic has cancer’. As a family of 5, constantly busy and having such a strong connection. You can’t even imagine how much those words can tear at your heart.
Numerous emergency visits, vomiting, unsteady balance, aches, and finally the emerg doctor at Owen Sound listened to my mom gut and understood my motherly instincts that something was not right. After a CT scan the doctor ordered had results no training can ever prep a parent for.
It was December 16, 2024, when Dominic was rushed to LHSC and had a seven-hour brain surgery procedure to remove the tumour.

After a successful surgery and while recovering in PICU is where we met Wendy from Childcan. Her dedication, and devotion to making sure we were comforted as we navigated the unknown truly displayed the utmost strength towards our parent hearts. From meal vouchers, comforting stuffies, a parking pass and just simply a listening ear. Childcan’s support helped guide our family along the journey.
As Serge, Dominic and I continued to be away from home and our two little ones Lucas and Bailey, Childcan ensured we were supported. Continuous check-ins, providing support through various connections and getting us through every step.
As we maneuvered to the next unplanned part of the journey, heading as a family to another country for Dominic to receive his initial stage of radiation and chemotherapy. Childcan supported us with funds towards safe tires so we could arrive at our destination safely. Not having to worry about the financial burden during such difficult times relieved a stress that we can’t even begin to describe.

Once the initial phase of treatment was completed and we made our way back to Canada for Dominic to start the next phase of chemotherapy in London, it was comforting arriving to the hospital to see a familiar face. Wendy welcoming Dominic back and supporting continuously with further meal vouchers, was such a blessing.
As treatment went on, we were fortunate enough to gain another Childcan friend, Todd. With treatment, appointments, check-ins and further admission for Dominic, we were given such a blessing to connect with Todd at numerous steps along the way.
Knowing we have Childcan’s support every step of the way, and even after treatment has finished, is absolutely amazing. Todd continues to provide opportunities in ways that Childcan can support that we are so grateful for.

Although treatment is over, many ways that Childcan supports our family is with the after effects of treatment. Dominic has neuropathy damage and is attending physiotherapy to help gain back the strength he used to have. Childcan, time and time again, supports us with funds towards his physio appointments as well as gas cards and meal vouchers when we have check-ups in London. These huge gestures alleviate stress upon us in so many ways.
We cannot thank Childcan enough for being so supportive and being a part of Dominic’s journey.
Thank you to Dominic's family for sharing his story, and for sharing how Childcan continues to be by your sides.
